Or at least his speechwriter did.
From Gerry Adams’ Sinn Féin Ard Fheis address last weekend:
Woody Guthrie once wrote: ‘Some rob you with a six gun, some with a fountain pen’.
From Dermot Ahern’s speech to the Justice session of the FF Ard Fheis today:
That late great American folf singer woody Guthrie sang of how ‘some will rob you with a six-gun, some with a fountain pen.’
Poor.
Whats wrong with using the same quote assuming its appropriate?
Hi Eoin. Thanks for registering for our convention next week.
‘No guthrie quotes’ memo going to Green types pronto. P.S. John G referenced PiL ‘anger is an energy’ on Eamon Keane show last week (http://tinyurl.com/ahn4qz). A first, I think.
Had no idea he was into post-punk…
And my argument for the eternal separation of rock stars (term not entirely applicable to Guthrie, I know) and politics/politicians strenghtens.
Lovely faux pas, shows how out of touch these people are with what the opposition are doing half the time.
Frank – I think he or his staff should have made more of an effort, considering the exact same quote was included in Adams’ televised speech just last week. Yes, the quote is a suitable one but surely there are many other literary/music references that would work just as well.
Damian – I never would have had Gormley down as the punk/post-punk type. Surely Melissa Etheridge is more up his street?
Ciara, ah now Bob Dylan’s work is made for quoting in lofty and vague political speeches.
